Focus on Dr. R. Baker Kearfott, Department of Mathematics Dr. R. Baker Kearfott has been quite a prolific professor recently. He has co-authored three books in the last couple of years 1) Knowledge Processing with Interval and Soft Computing (2008) by C. Hu, R.B. Kearfott, A. de Korvin & V. Kreinovich, 2) R.E. Moore, R.B. Kearfott & M.J. Cloud (2009) Introduction to Interval Analysis, 3) Classical and Modern Numberical Analysis: Theory, Methods, and Practice (2010) by A.S. Ackleh, E.J. Allen, R.B. Kearfott & P Seshaiyer. The latter of which was co-authored with UL mathematics professor Dr. Azmy Ackleh. In addition, Dr. Kearfott was an invited (expenses paid) speaker at the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing and at the World Congress of Global Optimization in Changsha, Hunan in June 2009. In November 2009, Dr. Kearfott was an invited speaker at 30 participant workshop in computer sciences at Schloss Dagstuhl, Wadern, Germany. Lastly, Dr. Kearfott is acting chair of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Working Group on the standardization of interval arithmetic. We commend Dr. Kearfott on all of his recent accomplishments. Outstanding Teacher The Ray P. Authement College of Sciences' own Dwynn Lafleur was selected as the 2007-08 Outstanding Teacher of the Year for the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. This award came as no surprise to many recipients of his dedicated and exciting style of A recent graduate of UL goes on to say "I highly recommend Dr. Lafleur for the Outstanding Teacher Award. He serves as a vital asset to the department by inspiring students with his energy and enthusiasm both inside and outside the classroom." His colleagues in the Department of Physics and the Ray P. Authement College of Sciences wish to congratulate Dr. Dwynn Lafleur for this well earned award and thank him for his many years of excellent teaching and numerous contributions to his Department, the Ray P. Authement College of Sciences and the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. instruction. A senior scientist at Sandia National Laboratory says that Dr. Lafleur "is an incredible teacher. I was always amazed at the organization of his lectures-he would move across the room while working complex physical equations on the board. He was excited about physics and really cared whether we were learning the basics." Woman of Excellence Anita C. Hazelwood, a professor in the Health Information Management department, was honored with the 2008 Award for Innovative Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Technology at the 19th International Conference on College Teaching and Learning. Additionally, she was recognized at the annual Women’s Health Expo as a “Woman of Excellence” in the Acadiana area. This honor is bestowed on women in Acadiana who are outstanding in their fields and who have made outstanding contributions to the lives of area citizens. Outstanding Advisors Annually, the University of Louisiana at Lafayette recognizes faculty members as Outstanding Advisors. Selection is based on several criteria, including advisee assessment, department head/dean recommendations, and the advisor’s philosophy. The Ray P.
