Department of Biology
Since 1990, the UL Lafayette Department of Biology has been recognized as the best in Louisiana by an independent panel of distinguished biologists who conduct periodic reviews of university biology departments. Students may major in biology, microbiology, or resource biology and biodiversity preparing for careers ranging from marine biology to medical sciences. The department also plays a major role in preparing students for postgraduate study in biological sciences and professional programs such as medicine, dentistry, optometry and physical therapy. Department of Chemistry

From the nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer to the scanning tunneling microscope, the Department of Chemistry is filled with modern pieces of equipment and faculty interested in teaching you how to use them. Department of Geology
Like getting your hands dirty? From the rivers and deltas of South Louisiana to the rocky wilds of Wyoming and south Dakota, you’ll have many opportunities to do just that on the many field experiences required by this curriculum. Preparation in both petroleum geology and in environmental geology is given. Department of Health Information Management

Registered Health Information Administrators do a lot more than keep medical records. They are trained to provide and interpret data for patient care, research, statistical reporting and planning. Department of Mathematics

What in the world can you do with a degree in mathematics? Graduates of this department have become teachers, actuaries, health management professionals, consultants in industry and government, and basic researchers. In the era of computers in kindergarten, the need for those with a firm grasp of the mathematical sciences is growing fast. Beginning with hand held calculators, you will rapidly graduate to using the equipment in the department’s three computer labs. The faculty will teach you the fine art of deductive reasoning and the language of mathematics-the language used by all the fields of science and technology. Department of Physics
From the study of acoustics to astrophysics and planetary science to environmental physics to the applications of ion beam accelerators to materials science, the Department of Physics is nationally known. If you are interested in nature at its most fundamental level, you are interested in physics. The Department has a long standing reputation for graduating well-prepared undergraduate and Master’s degree students.

You can get a job too! Graduates of this program have entered top doctoral programs and professional schools. At the present time they are enrolled at Ohio state, Miami(2), Maryland(2), Georgia Tech, North Texas, New Mexico, Mississippi, UNO and LSU. They have become research scientists at NASA; Oak Ridge, Sandia, and Los Alamos National labs; Navy oceanographic labs; and industrial laboratories. They have become presidents of companies and high ranking officers in the Air Force and Navy. They are research faculty members at, among others, Rice, Kansas State, Virginia, and Rensselear. Department of Renewable Resources
Want a career in applied areas of environmental, animal, plant, or soil science? Graduates from the Renewable Resources Department are found as veterinarians, environmental consultants, environmental/safety/health officers, water quality specialists, soil scientists, pharmaceutical or chemical representatives, park managers, animal caretakers, and business managers. They can be found in government as regulators or program managers, in industry as managers or technicians, and in academia as teachers and researchers. Because majors take a core of science courses along with other diverse offerings, they are prepared for a multitude of opportunities as managers of people and technology.
